1. What is Distributed Locking?

Fileshare is a cloud storage from the Swiss data center that allows you to work with colleagues in a team across locations. To make this possible, Fileshare locks the file when a user opens it for the first time. The colleague then receives the notification that the file can be opened, but is only available for read / write protection. As soon as the first employee closes the document again, it becomes available for other employees to process. We call this distributed locking. A check-IN, check-OUT is not necessary. Fileshare takes care of that.

Distributed locking is only available with defined applications

Distributed locking only works with predefined applications. This currently includes Microsoft Office and Softmaker Office.

2. Message about the lifting of the file lock

If a document remains open longer and is not closed, Fileshare releases the file again after a defined timeout so that other employees can work on it again. This can happen, for example, if the file remains open but the PC is in sleep mode. In this case, Fileshare asks the user whether it should set the distributed lock again (if this is possible and no other employee is working on the document. The message looks like the one below. Confirm with Yes if you want to set the lock again (normal case) or no if you no longer need the file.
